How chord transposition works

Transposing a chord progression means shifting every chord by the same number of semitones (half steps). The relationship between chords stays identical — only the key changes.

For example, the I–V–vi–IV progression in C major (C – G – Am – F) transposed up 7 semitones becomes the same progression in G major (G – D – Em – C). The emotional feel is the same, just in a different pitch range.

C → G → Am → F
G major (+7 semitones)
G → D → Em → C

Frequently asked questions

How do I transpose chord progressions?

To transpose a chord progression, shift every chord in the progression by the same number of semitones. For example, moving C–G–Am–F up by 2 semitones gives D–A–Bm–G. In Chord Sequence, use the transposition slider in the editor to shift the entire song in real time.

How many semitones are between common keys?

From C to D is 2 semitones. C to E is 4 semitones. C to F is 5. C to G is 7. C to A is 9. C to B is 11. Going up an octave is 12 semitones.

Why would I need to transpose a chord progression?

Transposing is useful when a song is too high or too low for your voice, when collaborating with a musician who plays in a different key, or when you want a fresh emotional feel from the same chord progression.
