How to use the drum machine
The grid
The drum machine loops one bar of music, chopped into 16 steps. Each row is one of 8 instruments — kick, snare, clap, two hi-hats, tom, rim and cowbell — and each square is a sixteenth note. Hit ▶ (or the space bar) and click squares while it plays: a lit square fires its sound every time the playhead sweeps past.
Shape the sound
The KIT selector swaps the whole sound palette: Analog is deep and round, Punch is tight and snappy, Lo-Fi is dusty and filtered. Your pattern stays put — only the character changes. Balance the mix with the small slider next to each track, or click a track's name to mute it.
Find a groove
Not sure where to start? Load a PRESET — from house and trap to bossa and afrobeat — then make it yours: move a kick, drop a clap, thin out the hats. Dial in the tempo with BPM, or press CLEAR and build a beat from silence.
What is a drum machine?
A drum machine programs a rhythm pattern instead of requiring it to be played live. Each instrument sits on its own row, and you turn individual steps on or off to build a beat — a workflow that traces back to hardware step sequencers like the Roland TR-808 and TR-909, which shaped entire genres from house to hip-hop.
The advantage over a real drum kit or a metronome: a programmed pattern is exact, repeatable, and easy to iterate on. You can loop a groove for as long as you like, swap the sound palette without touching the pattern, and hear a genre-appropriate starting point instantly with the built-in presets.
This drum machine runs entirely on the Web Audio API — every kick, snare and hi-hat is synthesized in real time from oscillators and filtered noise, not sample playback, so there's nothing to download and no loading time.

From 60 to 200 BPM. House usually sits around 120–128, hip-hop around 85–95, and drum & bass 170 and up.
